DECOLONIZING PALESTINIAN CULTURE &  THE ART OF PALESTINIAN CULTURAL RESISTANCE

Join Al-Awda New York and the Open Committees for Palestine on May 12th from 6-8pm at 7114 5th Avenue 5th Avenue in Brooklyn New York for an evening of Sharing, Preserving and Decolonizing Palestinian Culture.

We will spend the night sharing and recording Native Palestinian Knowledge of everything from folk stories, and folks-songs, to zaghareet and tatreez.

The evening is organized in the context of escalated Zionist cooptation of Palestinian culture and the neo-liberalization of Palestinian Society. By re-centering native Palestinian cultural practices we re-center Native Palestinian knowledge and reconsider the organization and re-organization of our society as a result of western and foreign domination and Zionist colonization.

Palestinian elders will gather to demonstrate and share Palestinian culture in an intimate setting in the heart of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, a Palestinian enclave of New York City.

ON TATREEZ AND ZAGHAREET
Tatreez and Zaghareet are part of Palestinian national identity. Tatreez, a.k.a Palestinian embroidery, has been practiced in Palestine for thousands of years and even to this day it is taught in school across Palestine and was learned in connection with production of Palestinian native costume, called the Thawb. Each village had its own stitch pattern and dominant colors and a Palestinian woman’s village could be deduced from the embroidery on her dress. Palestinian women will share tatreez tutorials and explain the different patterns of tatreez, their significance, and with which occasions they are associated.

Zaghareet refers to both ululations of celebration and folk-songs that recount the day or event’s occurrences sung most often in joy and celebration. Palestinian women will stage and present different styles of Zaghareet, and discuss their context and significance. Tutorials on how to enact Zaghareet will also be shared among the crowd, and the spoken zaghareet will be sung collectively, and recorded.
