November 14: Kafr Kassem كفر قاسم Film *Revival* Comes to the Community!

The name “Kafr Kassem” still resonates as the site of the 1956 Israeli massacre of unarmed villagers in the eponymous town. Alaouié’s film, in a style reminiscent of the cinematic landmark “The Battle of Algiers,” reconstructs the unfolding of the massacre in the gradual, detached style of Cinema Verite, along the way capturing vignettes of ordinary daily life, and even humor, of the Palestinian villagers. 

The film was honored with awards at two festivals (Carthage and Moscow), yet, for its political implications, became neglected into obscurity soon after its premiere. 

Now, through the work of volunteers, the film is returning to New York with a message of Palestinian resilience.

لا يزال اسم “كفر قاسم” يتردد كصدى لموقع المذبحة الاسرائيلية في عام ١٩٥٦ والتي ارتكبت بحق قرويين عزل في البلدة التي تحمل الاسم.
ويستعيد فيلم “علوية” احداث المجزرة تدريجيا من خلال شريط وثائقي يرصد مشاهد من الحياة اليومية للفلسطينيين والتي لا تخلوا من خفة الظل.
وسوف يقدر محبي السينما اسلوب “السينما فيريتيه” او سينما الواقع والذي يعيد الى الذاكرة الفيلم التاريخي “معركة الجزائر”.
تم تكريم الفيلم بعدد من الجوائز في مهرجاني قرطاج وموسكو غير ان قوة مضمونه السياسي ادت الى تهميشه وطيه في النسيان بعد عرضه الاول. 
الان ، بفضل جهود متطوعين، يعود الفلم الى نيو يورك ليذكرنا بصمود الفلسطينيين
