Press-conference / Teach-in at St. John the Divine Cathedral
Speakers are not yet not confirmed (possibly Fr. Sami Totah of Ramallah or Fr. Barrios Sheikh). Annemarie or Emily Jacir of Bethlehem and Mark Khano (a recent visitor from Jerusalem), plus an al-awda member to read the statements of the Palestinian Church leaders.
Ironically, all over the world people are celebrating Christmas except in Jesus’ birthplace and homeland. Palestinian towns – including many Christian towns – are suffering frequent shelling from tanks and helicopters and mass arrests. Just last week, both St. Nicholas and St. Michael Greek Orthodox Churches in the Bethlehem area were hit by Israeli missiles and heavy artillery. To date, over 300 Palestinians have been killed and over 10,000 injured, leading Bethlehem clergy to cancel this year’s Christmas celebrations.
Come here the statements of the New York religious community in support of human rights for Palestinian civilians. Come listen to informative talks and eyewitness accounts of the suffering of the Christian and Muslim populations of Palestine. We will be remembering their suffering during the holiday season.

Protest in front of the PA office in NY then march to the Israeli Consulate.

Al-Awda NY-NJ are having a protest in front of the Palestinian Authority (PA) mission in Manhattan then marching to the Israeli Consulate. This is to visibly make our demands for the right of return as an INTEGRAL and UNCOMPROMISING demand that is part of ANY negotiations

Some people may not know we are marching and so we will remain at the Palestine mission till at least 6:00 pm and then begin our march to the Israeli Consulate is on 2nd Ave between 42nd and 43rd Streets (22 blocks away).
We need to voice our protest to the Arafat deligation that has come to DC to resume the so called “peace” talks. We are demanding that they honor our right to return and not give it away in return for empty promises. We are demanding that the voice of the Intifada and the suffering of our heroic population be heard and respected.

SILENT DEMONSTRATION AT ROCKEFELLER CENTER IN SUPPORT OF THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE.
LET NEW YORKERS KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON IN PALESTINE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON. Participants will be led in a silent march around Rockefeller Center by a group of Guerrilla theater members. Signs of the deceased will be distributed.
Al-Awda organized a silent demonstration at Rockefeller Center in support of the Palestinian People, to make New Yorkers and Christmas shoppers aware of what’s going on in Bethlehem in this holiday season. Participants handed out hundreds of flyers and led a silent march around Rockefeller Center by a group of Guerrilla theater members. Signs bearing names of the deceased were displayed.

Palestine-Puerto Rico solidarity event.
The event is held at San Romero de las Americas church, hosted by Revs. Barrios and Eddie Lopez, and their generous congregation.
The purpose of this event is to inform the Puerto Rican community, aswell as all others, about the genocide of the past 52 years against the Palestinian people by the fascist zionist entity and its racist settlers.
Speakers wil include Palestinians (Christians as well as Muslims) giving us their testimony against the Zionist crimes we have been witnessing a flare up of during this new intifada, as well as grassroots puertorican activists (such as the Rev. Dr. Luis Barrios and Margarita Rosario of Mothers Against Police Brutality) who will bring to life for us the link between the Palestinian plight and the colonization, exploitation, incarceration, and police murder of Puertoricans.
This event will occur at 7pm on Friday December 8, at San Romero de Las Americas church, hosted by Revs. Barrios and Eddie Lopez, and their generous congregation. The location is 158st & Elton ave, Bronx, New York, which can be reached by the 2 or 5 trains to 149st and 3rd ave.

THE ART OF THE INTIFADA Lecture by Sliman Mansour.

Many people do not know that the Palestine Liberation Movement produced an art of great importance and beauty. Many do not believe that in the midst of the hardships of the Intifada artists living in the West Bank and Ghazze created a substantial artistic heritage and organized exhibitions of great popularity.
Born in the Palestinian village of Beir Zeit in 1947, Sliman Mansour spent his childhood at boarding schools in Bethlehem. Among his neighbors he was always known as the artist. Even while a child, townspeople brought him pictures of their loved ones to portray in painting. Then at school in Bethlehem, Mansour met with the patronage of a teacher who submitted his drawing to a United Nations Competition. Sliman won first prize. It confirmed him in a long career of art and artistic activism.
His first one artist show opened in Ramalla, Palestine, during the Intifada in 1981 at Gallery79. It only lasted four hours when suddenly the Israeli army closed both the show and the Gallery and later made it illegal to use red, green, white, and black – the colors of the Palestinian flag. Later, Sliman Mansour helped organize a number of shows in the West Bank and Gaza which were wildly popular in Palestine.
Sliman Mansour is one of Palestine’s most distinguished painters. His work exhibits great maturity and a consciousness of international currents in art. He now lives in Jerusalem where he heads the Al-Wasiti Art Center. He is currently visiting New York in connection with an exhibition of his work and the work of other Palestinian artists at the Visitors Lobby of the United Nations. Mansour will speak about his art and that of other Palestinian artists of the Intifada. Presented by Al-Awda.

Palestinian Refugees: Realistic Solutions and Feasibility of Return.
Dr. Salman Abu-Sitta, former member of the Palestine National Council, founder of the Canadian Arab Federation and world leading research authority on Palestinian refugees, was the featured speaker at the Nov. 27 forum at The New School, entitled Palestinian Refugees: Realistic Solutions and Feasibility of Return. The forum focused on the present situation of refugees by examining just, viable solutions to the refugee crisis and by providing an in-depth analysis of the question of Palestinian refugees in the context of the current Middle East conflict.
The first speaker was Dr. Roger Normand, Policy Director for the Center for Economic and Social Rights, who addressed the Israeli occupation of Palestine from an economic perspective. The event also featured an update report from a fact-finding mission in Palestine by Sara Flounders of the International Action Center.
The event was co-sponsored by the American Committee on Jerusalem, the American-Arab Anti Discrimination Committee, TURATH, the Palestine Right to Return Coalition/Al-Awda, and The New School Anthropology Student Association.

The Al-Awda Street Theatre Committee organized an event in front of the New York Times offices on 43rd between 6th and 7th Avenues in Manhattan, as part of an ongoing demonstration on Friday Oct 28. Actors wrapped themselves in the New York Times newspaper, wearing koufiyas, with their mouths gagged with a piece of the New York Times. The gagged actors were followed by an actor wearing an Israeli soldier uniform and holding a papier mache AK47 gun. Photos:

A newly formed group of artists who call themselves ArtAction held an event in Union Square in Manhattan. The event consisted of drawing in chalk on the pavement the body outline of all the victims of the latest violence in Palestine, their name, their age, and an X marking where they were shot.
