Michael Williams is a hero. On Jan.11, 2010, this unemployed father saw Muslim-hating bigot Joe Kenny harassing and abusing a group of teenage Arab women who were warming up in a pizzeria after a human rights rally.

When the bigot called the young women “terrorists” and told them to “go home”, Michael, who had been at the rally and had a bullhorn, walked out into the street and began speaking on it to divert the hater’s attention. Kenny followed him into the street, grabbed the bullhorn and punched it into Michael’s face. But Michael was arrested and, for carrying out his civic duty, he faces 5 years in prison. The DA is carrying out a blatantly political prosecution, based on anti-Muslim and anti-Arab prejudice rather than the facts of the case.

Michael’s trial begins on Tuesday, June 5, at 9:30. Human rights advocate Lamis Jamal Deek of the National Lawyers Guild NYC executive committee will be defending him. The trial is expected to last all week. Please come to court to show your concern and support.

For complex legal reasons surrounding the case, the defense is requesting that no political t-shirts, keffiyehs or insignia be worn in court. But please be there if you can.
